Over the years, I have transformed two bathrooms in my home, and despite my experience, each project presents new challenges and requires meticulous planning. If you’re like me, you might prefer to dive into the fun aspects, like selecting paint colors, tiles, and accessories and spending endless hours browsing Pinterest for inspiration. However, there’s much more to consider when transforming an outdated bathroom into a personal sanctuary, for example, how to plan for a layout and placement of the fixtures and how to use the space, or setting a realistic budget (or as close as you can) to determine how much of an investment you want to make in your new space. You have to think about lighting, materials, storage, etc. In this post, I have provided a few quick tips to consider before you take on your bathroom remodel project.

Assess the current layout and fixtures- deciding if there were any items you want to keep and what fixtures would stay in their current location. Trust me, your budget will go overboard if you don't think about these things. Anything you can repurpose or keep in the current location will save you on cost. Before embarking on any renovation project, it's crucial to assess the current state of your guest bathroom. Look closely at the existing fixtures, tiles, and overall layout. Is the space cramped? Are the tiles chipped or dated? Are the fixtures showing signs of wear and tear? You can create a plan that addresses these specific issues by identifying the areas that need improvement.

Your bathroom's design style and color scheme will set the tone for the entire area. Whether you prefer a contemporary, minimalist, or traditional aesthetic, it's essential to choose a design style that aligns with your taste and complements the overall design of your home. Consider the existing decor and architecture to ensure a cohesive look throughout your space. Once you've selected a design style, it's time to choose a color scheme. Opt for colors that promote relaxation and create a welcoming atmosphere. Soft or warm neutrals with hints of bold accent colors can bring new life into your guest bathroom.

I suggest mixing a maximum of three finishes, but using the same finish throughout the project is also okay.

1. Lighting: Good lighting is crucial for any bathroom. Consider a combination of ambient and accent lighting to create a well-lit space. Install dimmers to create a relaxing ambiance and ensure ample lighting for grooming tasks.

2. Storage: Invest in storage solutions to keep your guest bathroom organized and clutter-free. Consider floating shelves, wall-mounted cabinets, or built-in storage options. To maximize storage capacity, utilize every inch of space above and below the sink.

3. Mirrors: Mirrors serve a practical purpose and enhance the visual appeal of your bathroom. 

4. Flooring: Update the flooring to add a touch of luxury to your bathroom. Choose durable and water-resistant materials such as ceramic, porcelain, or natural stone tiles. Consider laying tiles in different directions to add visual interest. In my book, laying your floors in a herringbone pattern is always a win. 

5. Shower or bathtub: Consider upgrading your bathroom with a large shower or bathtub if space allows. A sleek and modern shower or a luxurious bathtub can elevate your guests' overall bathing experience.
